How To Navigate A World On Fire

Standard

“We are not given a short life but we make it short, and we are not Ill-supplied but wasteful of it.”

Seneca

Have you ever connected with older generations, and realized it’s always the same? The human condition seems hellbent on killing the world. Not intentionally, but by wanting to perpetuate a standard of living founded on capitalism. We strive for what they tell us is “success”. In the past, it was a white picket fence and a nuclear family, a television, and a refrigerator. Now we want the latest Apple tech, we want a home in both the real world and Metaverse, and we want to be celebrated across all social platforms like some sort of demi-god D-list celebrity. Well not ALL of us want this, but this seems to be the trending sentiment.

I read “Letters From A Stoic” by Seneca recently, and everything he talked about was 99% still relevant to the human condition today. For context, Seneca was a philosopher who was born in Spain over 2,000 years ago. He was educated in Rome, and then exiled to Corsica. Anyways… What did Seneca have to say? Here are his top 3 lessons, among many others.

Find an anchor:

“You want to live-but do you know how to live? You are scared of dying-and, tell me, is the kind of life you lead really any different from being dead?”

What a great question. “Is the life you lead any different from being dead?” I interpret this to mean that your life should have some sort of purpose. If you don’t have a path founded with some sort of goal you’re just floating around, which isn’t really living. I think most people seem to anchor their life in achieving monetary success – because we align money with power and significance. We are also inundated with content like the Kardashians, who don’t seem to have any goals other than to influence our standards of beauty to the completely unattainable and to maintain their status of wealth. Where are the people who are giving us real food for thought? What we need more of are educators, not influencers. What are you living for and why? Do you have an anchor? I’m still finding mine, but I think for the most part it’s living a peaceful life and making a positive impact in some way. TBD.

Never be a slave to your wealth:

“For men in a state of freedom had thatch for their shelter, while slavery dwells beneath marble and gold.”

I think this statement reinforces the first lesson. If your anchor is wealth, how can you really be alive? It’s like chasing the rabbit at a dog race. The standard of wealth is always going. Moreover, sometimes, we are presented with situations that make us have to choose between wealth and ethics. When this happens, most people seem to choose wealth. For example, look at the oil industry. Look at our Earth on fire. Climate change is here. But many want gas-guzzling vehicles that make loud noises (most of which are men trying to prove their ‘masculinity’) and we want all the things that we’re told make us part of a class of human beings considered within the “wealth” category. We all need money to survive (if you live in the parts of the world that have an economy – there are a few who just live completely off the grid). Perhaps we have a fear of poverty, which makes us run in the other direction. When we’re running so far and so fast, our path blurs and we forget the other parts of life along the way. What’s your relationship to wealth?

Fight your ego:

”You have to persevere and fortify your pertinacity until the will to good becomes a disposition to good.”

Basically, find a goal that you pursue that comes from a real place. It seems like many of us tend to pursue a life that supplements the ego/”justifies” our significance in this world. For example, your goal is wealth and you want the newest car, biggest house, flashiest lifestyle… When you retreat into your mind at night, sans Lunesta, are you truly happy? When you make a decision, is it always to serve your interests? Or are you considering the impact your decisions make on others?

Other stuff….

The only thing I didn’t agree with was that he believed that “animals were not truly happy” since he reasoned they had “no intellect”. I think animals are smart and they teach us how to be present. They’ve lived longer than us and they give us so much. I’ve seen my dog sad and happy – I’ve seen animals display a colorful variety of emotions that require a certain level of intellect to express.

No one is perfect. Life is unfair. We all know this. But can we do more to improve the quality and substance of life for all? Can you breathe through hardships, and not ground yourself in anger should you survive? Extreme emotions are all ego. It’s normal to feel. Let it pass through you, but don’t let it control you. Probably the most difficult way to live, but much better than drowning until we hit the ultimate state of unconsciousness, death.

How We Understand Suicide

Standard

Sometimes it can feel like your body is a kidnapper who’s caged you in for a life term, and your soul is simply suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. Sometimes this feeling can be so overwhelming, you try to do something about it.

Kate Spade. Anthony Bourdain. Robin Williams. Chester Bennington. The list of people who have taken their lives, some who lived in the limelight and many others in the shadows is endless. The idea of taking your own life has existed since we became aware that “we live.” I am about to butcher a quote from Van Gogh, who said, “we take a train to get to Tarascon or Rouen, we take death to reach a star.” Artists and entertainers get remembered when they die- but mostly because they were members of a community of people forced to live on stage. They may have enjoyed the audience, but at the end of the day, something was missing. When you live your life performing, when do you allow yourself to feel and express the emotions that aren’t going to bring in ratings or be well-received? It is the same for the non-stage player. The basic person. In my opinion, at its core, the reason for suicide is an inherent lack of community, connection, and communication (even within your own thoughts). Some people don’t believe in mental illness as a real health issue, and to those people- you’re just another strain of being ignorant and sick in your own way. Words can fail us just as much as when a friend is deaf to the words you speak. We are not taught to understand our own thoughts and express them in a healthy way. We are taught, from birth, that the world is too big and we need to revert to mimicry the majority (or the media) in what we can and cannot say. How we can and cannot feel. And if we try to speak up about feeling bad, the only options are prescription drugs or just swallowing your perspective so it’s easier for others. This is one of the reasons why some choose to isolate themselves physically or emotionally- because the idea of faking being ok or pandering for the sake of another’s comfort is exhausting. I think many times we mistake community for creature comfort, and we lose the opportunity to really find ourselves and define what we need. Generally we call this period “adolescence” but I like to call it “just trying.”

I am in my 30’s, and I am guilty of trying to end my own life (there were a few attempts dating back to the age of 7, but there is only one incident were I almost succeeded). I had discovered an infidelity committed by an ex-lover and and ex-friend, and I took every pill I had. To make things worse, I had already lost certain motor skills from the effect of the pills, and still tried to slit my wrists. The result was a lot of blood from improperly self-inflicted wounds, and somehow waking up in the ER with my stomach pumped and wrists bandaged. Nothing is more embarrassing than failing at something, especially something as simple as suicide. But if you have to fail, perhaps not accomplishing the goal of ending your life is for the best. You get to wake up from a bad dream, and take responsibility for it.

And here’s the point. We are all responsible for each other. Whether it’s a celebrity that posts an off tweet and later deletes it, or it’s that co-worker or person (you can never seem to remember their name but you can see their sadness), or that man on the streets yelling at invisible monsters, or that sibling that you’ve lost touch with, or even that person you always see sitting alone at the coffee shop- we are all going through something. We are taught that self-care is a luxury, and there isn’t enough time to feel concern for others. Within the communities we’ve created, we’re encouraged to follow a gold standard for that community- which can often result in censorship. In the worst case, we learn to censor our own feelings and thoughts, and if we feel bad- we take a xanax or we take a drink. Or in some cases, when a person is not taking responsibility for their feelings, the result is aggressive or criminal behavior (we have an unfortunate history of school shootings, several of which were the result of a child feeling unheard both inside theirselves and within their school community). We need to make it a point to understand that every person is fragile and complicated, and there is no such thing as normal. We need to exercise compassion- in our language an acknowledgement of others. We need to be aware of our own sadness, and find a way to express it and understand that it’s ok. This is how we can begin to take responsibility for ourselves- and just maybe, inspire others to do so.

Suicide is a growing problem in the United States. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published a survey Thursday showing suicide rates increased by 25% across the United States over nearly two decades ending in 2016. Twenty-five states experienced a rise in suicides by more than 30%, the government report finds.

Below is a list of suicides I pulled from Wikipedia. I would have liked to have pulled a comprehensive list from a more reliable source, but I feel like shit right now. Now imagine how much longer this list would be, if you included those who were deemed as “not notable.” We all have the potential to do great and contribute to a wonderful existence, but we are never encouraged to accept this potential. I hope today you tell someone that you love them, and tell a stranger something kind. Even the smallest act of kindness can have the biggest impact on someone’s existence. We need to make our global community more accepting and aware of how different it is in the brain of someone with depression, anxiety, and addiction (which I believe is a symptom of depression).

Side Note: Hitler is on this list, in addition to many other people who did some real bad things. Although they did terrible things, it would have been better were they to have lived and suffered the consequences of their crimes. My point in sharing this list is to showcase how many perceive suicide as a way to evade the responsibility to being alive and taking responsibility for yourself.

List of suicides

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The following are lists of notable people who died from suicide. Suicides committed under duress are included. Deaths by accident or misadventure are excluded. Individuals who might or might not have died by their own hand, or whose intention to die is in dispute, but who are widely believed to have deliberately killed themselves, may be listed under “possible suicides”.

Possible suicides[edit]

Jean Seberg

The Death of Socrates

  • Clodius Albinus (197), Roman emperor, killed himself after a defeat in battle (possibly executed by Septimius Severus)[742]
  • Salvador Allende (1973), president of Chile, gunshot[743][744][745][746]
  • Wade Belak (2011), Canadian ice hockey player. Belak was found dead in his home in Toronto, and the Police investigated his death as a suicide.[747] Later, hockey analyst and former player P.J. Stock alleged that Belak’s death was not a suicide, but accidental.[748] Though Stock later stepped back from his comments, members of Belak’s family also believe his death was accidental.[749]
  • Le Corbusier (1965), one of the pioneers of modern architecture, went for a swim against his doctor’s orders. There is some debate whether his death was a suicide[750]
  • James Forrestal (1949), First U.S. Secretary of Defense, Secretary of the Navy, fell from 16th floor of building (disputed suicide)[751]
  • Hannibal (183–181 BC),[752] Carthaginian military commander and tactician, possibly poison[753][754]
  • Jim Jones (1978), American cult leader and founder of Peoples Temple, gunshot[755]
  • Sung-jae Kim (1995), singer and former member of Deux, stabbed in the arm 28 times with a syringe containing animal anisthetic. It is unknown if it was a murder or suicide[756]
  • Jules Lequier (1862), French philosopher, probably swam voluntarily out into the ocean[757]
  • Primo Levi (1987), Italian Jewish chemist, writer and Holocaust survivor, fall from his third-story apartment[758]
  • Meriwether Lewis (1809), U.S. explorer and partner of William Clark, gunshot; there is some debate as to whether his death was a suicide[759]
  • Lucretius (c. 55 BC), Roman poet and Epicurean philosopher. The only source of his suicide is Jerome who is considered by scholars as unreliable and hostile towards Lucretius[760]
  • Kurt Gödel (1978), Austrian-American logician, mathematician and philosopher, died of starvation as a result of refusing to eat anything not prepared by his wife, out of fear of being poisoned. It is unclear whether this is a suicide[761]
  • Orgetorix (60 BC), Gallic member of the ruling class of the Helvetii and conspirator. It is uncertain if he committed suicide or was executed[762]
  • Freddie Prinze (1977), American actor and comedian, gunshot. while under the influence of methaqualone and alcohol. Initially ruled suicide but later determined accidental[763][764]
  • Jean Seberg (1979), American actress, barbiturate overdose, probably foul play[765][766]
  • Elliott Smith (2003), American singer, songwriter and musician, stab wounds to chest. While Smith’s death was originally reported as a suicide, the official autopsy report released in December 2003 left open the question of homicide[767][768]
  • Socrates (399 BC), Classical Greek Athenian philosopher, credited as one of the founders of Western philosophy, drank poison, probably hemlock[769][770][771][772] Because Socrates was forced to poison himself to death as his sentence following his conviction for impiety and corrupting the minds of the youth of Athens, the question of whether this constitutes a genuine suicide is a subject of debate[773]
  • Luigi Tenco (1967), Italian singer and songwriter, gunshot to the head[774]

Stefan Zweig, 60, Austrian-born novelist, biographer, essayist (Amok, Adepts in Self-Portraiture, Marie Antoinette), and his wife, Elizabeth; by poison; in Petropolis, Brazil. Born into a wealthy Jewish family in Vienna, Zweig turned from casual globe-trotting to literature after World War I, wrote prolifically, smoothly, successfully in many forms. His books banned by the Nazis, he fled to Britain in 1938 with the arrival of German troops, became a British subject in 1940, moved to the U.S. the same year, to Brazil the next. He was never outspoken against Naziism, believed artists and writers should be independent of politics. Friends in Brazil said he left a suicide note explaining that he was old, a man without a country, too weary to begin a new life. His last book: Brazil: Land of the Future.”

Who Are You?

Standard

Are you a Rembrandt or a Picasso?

Picasso Abstract Portrait

Picasso Abstract Portrait

Who am I? This existential question often tingles throughout your lifetime, sometimes stabbing your sides during stormy weather.

Growing up in one of those “broken homes” (like a David Sedaris meets Augusten Burroughs with a dash of 100 Years Of Solitude) leaves you with a mist of PTSD throughout. Some like to call it perspective. But others, mental illness.

Sometimes I look at my life and I wonder, “how the hell did I get here?” I see the pain I can inflict on others with passing words, and the pain I feel on a constant basis. I see my mother in my feelings, and my father in my reason. I then realized, perhaps our entire existence is one giant self-portrait in the making. And not the Dorian Gray type.

Perhaps you start out as a canvas painted by your mother and father. Eventually you begin to add your own lines and colors to it. Life throws some shapes at you, and they adjust into your bigger picture.

Sometimes you stop painting and you look back at your portrait, and you wonder “how the hell did that bold yellow stripe get there? Right in the mishmash of my face? how did I not see it before?”

And then you realize, your mother painted that damn stripe.

There’s nothing you can do to change it, it’s been there all along. All you can do is accept that its there, and work with it. Find a way to make it fit.

And so there I go with my temper and my fury. I get angry many times, unreasonably so. Growing up, I would often hear my parents fighting. Violence was always there. When I get upset, I hear the echoes of an angry woman throwing a flashlight at my father’s head, or blaming everyone but herself for misfortune.

That’s my yellow stripe for the day: responsibility.

Things will happen that will make you feel, and that is why you are alive. Use anger to succeed and flourish- instead of making dead weight.

Maybe I always wanted to be a classical beauty, but I know I’m an abstract piece of work. I hope the shapes and colors will emit harmony one day.

Hey MLK- cheers to your day!

There can be no deep disappointment where there is not deep love.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

The opposite of love is apathy. That is why we have become so concerned with the narcissism aspect of this generation- the focus on self-love has taken away altruism. Instead of feeling passionate about a cause, we are plagued by indifference. There is hope in hate and disappointment because there is feeling involved. Feelings are just waters that we’ve guided into rivers and oceans- the direction of their current can always be subject to change.

I am a very emotional person- I can be full of rage one moment, then maniacally happy the next. But I like being able to feel. Maybe the first step we should all take, is one outside our front door. Too often we’ve been persuaded by the dim light of our televisions and computers, to ignore the light of day. Los Angeles has been at an average of 80 for the past week… I’d be glued to my screen, if the dogs didn’t have to go outside. Thanks to their need for daily bowel movement, I’ve literally been able to see the light. And its pretty warm and enchanting- where is everyone else?

Whether the issue involves race or sexuality- the epicenter of MLK’s big message was compassion and feeling. He constantly reminded us that you must accept your humanity and feel, and allow that to guide your voice. Whether that feeling is good or bad, addressing it will bring you to that necessary place.

So if you get a chance today, open your doors or your windows- and let out a big yell!

It’ll make you feel a hell of a lot.

Always fun to do this while driving down the highway.
